BetterThanOrganic™
Alright… so what is BetterThanOrganic™? Its a pretty bold statement to make after all.
It’s pretty simple really, BetterThanOrganic™ really is a natural way of growing vegetables in a garden or farm environment.
Ok, so lets ask the obvious question – Isn’t organic … natural?? Well the answer which may surprise you is YES and NO.
So lets break this down to better understand the differences and to clear up any confusion.
Organic farming can very well be natural farming in exactly the same way as we talk about it here. Often enough small organic farms will use many if not all of the techniques of BetterThanOrganic™, or natural farming. But then there is the “other” organic farming.
Hmmm. “Other” Organic Farming? Yup. This would be your garden variety Government Legislated Organic Farming (GLOF). I’m referring mostly, although not exclusively, to Big AG organic farming. You see, “organic” farming as legislated by government allows for tilling, manufactured inputs and “organic” pesticides. In fact the main focus in Big Ag is to use “natural” pesticides. How is that working out? Well, Here is Scientific American’s take on organic farming.
And below is a short video from a Western Illinois University Organic Research Farm to explain:
Now lets be clear… From a holistic perspective organic farming is way better than traditional farming. I don’t think there’s much of an argument regarding that except from Big Ag (think tobacco). But organic farming doesn’t necessarily address some key issues in what I would call “earth management” and it is NOT better than natural farming. ( You should see how those beautiful strawberries are grown in California. Or maybe you shouldn’t.)
BetterThanOrganic™ natural farming practices DO NOT include the use of any pesticides or herbicides. Period. As far as inputs go in natural farming, we are looking mostly at compost, manure, occasionally some ash for potassium or lime for calcium. That’s pretty much it. If you have clay you don’t really need anything but compost or manure. If you have very poor soil you may want to add some essential trace minerals with Azomite rock dust.
So while organic farming is an improvement over regular farming practices it is no mach for BetterThanOrganic™ natural farming. if food quality and purity is important to you make sure that your food sources are as pure and natural as possible.
