Our Farm

Ok. Let’s just start off with a confession. Our farm is simply a hobby run amok. Yes AMOK! But you have to wonder how many farms have their humble beginnings rooted (ahem) in the same soil (ahem, ahem)?

What once was a bit of a pastime of course grows, like a weed, into something that just happens to take a life of its own. A small garden plot here, then a few raised- beds there, then some field- beds in the back and before you know it you’ve been had. Yup, HAD I tell ya! Sucked in by some swamp creature with tentacles pulling and tugging, offering no hope of ever escaping its clutches. Just try to back out of that – good luck!

But let’s keep looking on the bright side shall we? – We have veggies, lots and lots of veggies!

We all know that there is nothing better than the crunch of a fresh carrot coming straight out of the ground or a heavenly mix of 3 lettuces, arugula, mizuna and mustard greens topped with some sunflower and pea shoots blended with some delectable cukes and tomatoes for a lovely luncheon salad. Mmmmm, mmmm, mmm. Yup, nothing like it. Oh, and did I mention tomatoes??

Oh, those pesky tomatoes. Singing their siren song all summer long, enchanting every farmer and foodie alike. From the petite Gray’s Cherry, to the monstrous, and I mean that in a good way, Beefsteaks. (Easy there ladies, I didn’t say beefcakes. Sheesh.)

For those of you who have never had the sensuous pleasure of experiencing a Brandywine on your palette, to you folks I offer my sincerest condolences. For those of you who have, high fives, you know what I’m talking about.

So what’s so cool about our farm you might be asking?

Well, aside from the usual blah, blah … family run, local, organic, sticking it to Monsanto, reducing fossil fuels, singlehandedlyfixingglobalwarmingandsavingthewholewideworldfromasteroidsandaliens©™ and impeaching Trump, it is also saving our sanity, filling in idle time… yeah, and mostly, it gives us oodles of pleasure.

But seriously folks, here is what’s cool and getting cooler at the farm. We are committed to standing “regular” vegetable farming on its head. Gasp!! Yup. We are growing everything UPSIDE DOWN!!!

Ok, ok. That wasn’t serious but what is serious is that we are espousing some very cool and fairly innovative techniques to managing our farm. We are using no-till methods (except new field installations – but even that may change) and intensive farming methods to grow our vegetables. Our main focus is on “growing” our soil. Soil is the lifeline to all green living things. If you have poor soil it reasons that you will have poor results. So we focus on soil-building as our number one task. Funny thing is that it’s not even hard. Soil-building really only requires one thing…compost. It doesn’t even need any other major inputs. Cool eh? So for this reason alone I now declare our farm ‘betterthanorganic’©™.

So there you have it in a nutshell. If you happen to drop into our website every so often you will find lots of articles and resources elaborating on the no-till gardening/farming methods on my blog as well as a whole bunch of tips & tricks to help you to grow better, tastier and more nutritious food. And if you happen by our farm you may just get to enjoy some of the fruits vegetables of our labour.
