Zucchini
These bad boys of the garden grow fast and large! A couple of these plants will usually do the trick for an average family.
They definitely need to be planted in full sun and in well drained, rich soil. Generously add a cup of good organic fertilizer into each planting hole when transplanting. Give them room to spread out. Hint: we sometimes plant these using a small tarp with a hole cut into the centre for the plant. This makes the whole weeding thing mostly a non-starter and gives the plants a nice clean slate to sprawl out on. Just make sure you water well into the hole so the plant doesn’t dry out.
When watering be careful to water the soil around the plants and try not to spray the leaves from above as these plants can be quite susceptible to mildew. If you do have leaves with mildew simply cut these off the plant and burn or throw them away. Don’t compost the mildewed leaves.
Pick your zucchinis often to encourage new fruits. Don’t be afraid to eat these as baby zukes…they are delicious sautéed into stir-fries or eaten raw with dip!! And definitely look up a good recipe for zucchini bread, hopefully one with chocolate chips added! Yum!!
