Astro

Arugula, also known as Rocket or Roquette, is one of the best (and most nutritious!) tools for turning your regular salad into something new and exciting. Astro arugula has a wonderful nutty flavour with a slightly spicy kick, which tastes great as a garnish on nearly anything! Not to mention is it fairly easy to grow, only needing basic maintenance in order to thrive. I honestly can’t help myself from grazing on this every time I’m weeding in the garden-it’s that good!

Bergam’s Green Leaf

Bergam’s Green Leaf will give you high yields of beautiful lacy green leaves during spring, summer and autumn. The dense heads are filled with a sweet, mild taste, and a lovely crunch, and are slower to bolt than many other lettuce varieties. Bergam’s is tolerant to diseases such as CRR (corky root rot) and tip burn.

Cimmaron Red Romaine

Dating back to the 18th century, Cimmaron Red is a tried and true romaine. Its leaves are deep green at the base of the stem, while the top of the plant is a bronze/maroon colour. With a crisp, sweet taste, this is a great way to add some flare and flavor to you meals. Regardless of the weather, this variety holds up well, and maintains a firm and solid head for harvesting.

Coastal Star Romaine

Tall and regal, Coastal Star romaine is dark in colour, and reaches about a foot in height. As an earlier maturing lettuce, this variety is lovely harvested as tender romaine hearts, or left to mature longer into full heads of crunchy, sweet greens. Tightly packed, one plant will supply you with a large amount of leaves, which is great, as Coastal Star is one of the darkest green in colour, making it very nutritious!

Dragon’s Tongue (Red Dragon)

With its deep green leaves and stunning maroon veins, Dragon’s Tongue is a must have arugula for your recipes! This plant’s strong, oak shaped leaves make it a great option for raw or cooked meals, and adds a peppery flavor with sweeter honey undertones making it less bitter or overwhelming than other arugula varieties. Originally from Great Britain, Dragon’s Tongue can withstand harsh weather conditions allowing for a long and plentiful harvest season!

Green Mizuna

Mizuna is one of my favourite microgreens, with a taste very similar to arugula. Mizuna, however has a bit of extra spice and hint of bitterness (which could almost be described as ‘earthy’), while still maintaining a charming nutty flavor which is great for salads, or added into stirfrys and soups. And oh-so-pretty!
A single mizuna plant has the ability to produce around 200 stems of feathery greens, and reach a height of about half a meter.

Indigo Hybrid

This lovely veggie is certainly not lacking in appearance! Deep maroon leaves with white ribbing make this quite an attractive variety of radicchio indeed! Large, round, and firm, the Indigo Hybrid will produce all spring and summer long, providing you with very large yields due to its very high resistance to disease. You will be rewarded with a crisp and juicy leaf with a sweet and spicy taste, and a peppery kick to keep you on your toes! For an extra little ‘bang for your buck’, let this plant go to flower once you have harvested. It has sweet blue flowers, not unlike a chicory plant!

Red Frills

Your summer salads will benefit greatly from these microgreens, not only because they look so beautiful but because they add a spicy, mustardy kick. This variety comes with slightly larger leaves in a deep maroon colour, which results in them being a lovely option as a garnish for cooking. Although they do best in cool weather, Red Frills mizuna is an easy plant to have in your garden, needing only a small amount of maintenance.

Red Sails Leaf

A stunning plant! Winner of the AAS (All America Selections) award in 1985, Red Sails has been delighting foodies everywhere. Supplying you with a lovely 10 inch head of lettuce, this variety has frilly deep maroon and bronze leaves, fading into a delightfully vibrant green near the base of the plant. It is also very slow to bolt, which gives you a bit of extra harvesting time. The supple leaves are not at all bitter, even when left on the plant for longer periods of time. Instead you will be rewarded with a buttery taste.

Sangria Red Butterhead

Another award winner! This is a French variety with beautiful thick leaves. The main leaf is a brilliant light green, with edges that are just dusted in a lovely rose red hue (kind of like you dipped them in Sangria – hence the name!) This butterhead is fairly tolerant to weather, and to diseases like tip burn. It is also slow to bolt, giving you extra time to enjoy its lovely flavor throughout the season.

Sylvestra Butterhead

Unlike many other butterhead or Boston lettuces, Sylvestra’s leaves are not nearly as leathery, instead they are soft and crisp. They grow large green heads, almost rose-like in appearance, and boast a wonderful, creamy interior. This lettuce is also very disease resistant.
